A Great First Electric Razor

Yesterday, a single mom asked about her 13 year old son who was growing a mustache.  She had no experience with shaving, and wasn't sure where to turn to.  I suggested a cheap Norelco razor.  At 13, his mustache is fine hair, so spending a lot of money on a fancy razor isn't necessary.  If he likes the experience, he can upgrade someday to something more expensive.  My suggestion was the special Star Wars "Stormtrooper" Wet & Dry Electric, which both looks cool and is a great entry level razor for any aspiring member of the First Order!  She bought one, so I figured I'd share this great find with you!

You'll Want This Phone Stand When You're Away From Fido

Well, it's happened again.  Someone has walked up to me to ask where they can get yet another one of the things I use.  This time it's the Moko Cell Phone Stand available from Amazon.

A great little stand for watching Barkley.  Using the phone in landscape mode gets the best view of the EZVIZ camera I reviewed earlier today.

What I like about the Moko stand is that it folds flat for when you don't need to use it, and it's adjustable so that you can view your phone at any angle.  It's made out of sturdy plastic, and it's available in white, black, silver, blue or pink.  I got white but silver and black look nice too.

One downside of the stand is that in portrait mode it doesn't allow for charging underneath the phone.  One solution for that is to turn the phone upside down.  Personally I only use the phone in landscape mode as I like to have it sit there and play the EZVIZ camera feed.

For the price, I can keep up on Barkley at a glance.  It's a lot better than the old stand I had, which I made out of a business card.

Great Pictures with the Nikon 18-300 Zoom Lens

Recently we took Barkley to the beach.  As you know, I bought him a Jeep to take on the sand.  But I also bought a new camera lens to get great pictures!  It was well worth it!  If you're a Nikon user, the lens is the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED.  This is a cheaper, but also newer, version of the more expensive f/3.5-5.6G lens.  The main difference between the two is weight... the less expensive version is considerably lighter.  In fact, I don't notice much of a difference between my 18-300mm and my 18-70mm.  Now some will say there is a quality difference between the two, but I'd be hard pressed to tell the difference in the real world, and you probably can't either.  Both of these lenses are very, very good.  For the records these photos were taken on a Nikon D5500.  From my three day trip, I got about 30 photos which I really liked, which is pretty good considering my object was in constant motion.

So what's the advantage of the 18-300 for a guy like me?  Better ability to get close to my subject.  Better results for depth of field.  And the 18-300 works great as an unofficial camera too.  Basically it's an all around fantastic lens that can be used in any situation.  Zoom lens have their downsides... they are a jack of all trades and a master of none.  But if you're using the lens to capture your pet, you don't have time to be switching out lens, and you probably aren't going to want to carry a bunch of lens around either.

The photos below haven't been processed in any way.  They are straight from the camera... the only editing is for cropping (obviously.)

Home Security Cameras for Cheap People Like Me

Everybody is always asking me where to get the things that I buy, so I decided I'm just going to start a blog so I can direct people there instead of having to find links and send them.  Yes, I know, I'm like 20 years late to the blog party, but in fairness my first blog ran from 1996 through 2003, and I've just been off living life instead.

So first up, and I get asked about this all the time, is the cameras I use to watch Barkley.  (See photos below).  They are the EZVIZ Mini O cameras that I bought off Amazon.  They are super simple to set up.  I originally bought just one, and then I ended up buying another one a couple days later.  They probably aren't the world's greatest security cameras, but they get the job done.  The video is pretty good, and you can digitally zoom in for more detail.  You can also listen to audio, which picks up things like Barkley and the dog walker pretty well.  The camera also has speakers but they are very quiet.  You can make out what someone is saying, but it's no replacement for an entercom system.

The Mini O also allows you to add a SD card for saving video, and has motion sensors to detect any movement.  I've turned mine off since Barkley sets them off, but they'd be useful for a more security oriented setup.

The camera just connects to your wifi setup, and you can connect to the cameras via an app on your phone, or log in to the EZVIZ website.  I'm behind a firewall at work, so the website doesn't work well for me, but the app is great!  I'm really picky, as you all know, so I was really surprised that I actually liked this product.

Okay, that's all for now.  Obviously I'll be featuring a lot of animal related items here, but I'll share anything else that I think is great too.
